MISSION STATEMENT
THE COMPEER PROGRAM OF SAN MATEO COUNTY SEEKS TO DIMINISH THE LONELINESS AND ISOLATION EXPERIENCED BY INDIVIDUALS IN THE WAKE OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND SEEKS TO ASSIST IN THE RECOVERY PROCESS BY PROVIDING SUPPORTED ONE-TO-ONE FRIENDSHIPS
Purpose
Compeer matches community volunteers in supportive friendship relationships with individuals receiving mental health treatment. "Compeer" means a companion who is also a peer or equal. Loneliness, failure, fear and loss of self-esteem are universal experiences of those who suffer from mental illnesses. A caring friend can help restore some joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both. Furthermore, the purpose of the relationship is to improve an individual's sense of belonging and self-esteem, increase his/her social and communication skills and strengthen other positive traits.
